Kia Soul Historical Overview
The Kia Soul is a popular subcompact SUV that’s made an impact among fans of this set of wheels. Before the Soul took the country by storm, it had a humble beginning. We at Ken Ganley Kia are happy to explain the history of this vehicle. Continue reading to learn more.
How It All Started
Initially, the Kia Soul was designed in a facility in California. This ride’s design was strikingly similar to the Kia Mesa, a set of wheels that was shown to the world in 2006. The manufacturer decided to showcase the Soul at an automotive show in Paris, France in 2008. After getting enthusiasts excited about its efficiency and flexibility, Kia went full speed ahead in developing plans to build this automobile. Kia’s South Korean and Chinese factories began building the Soul the same year it was introduced. Since its release in 2008, Kia has sold over a million units around the world. The Soul is projected to maintain its sales due to Kia’s persistence in providing energy-efficient motor vehicles. In 2014, Kia started pursuing an electric variant of the Soul. And the manufacturer pulled this off in 2019, giving drivers an option between a gas-powered and all-electric version of the Kia Soul.
How It Evolved
Critics of the Kia Soul complained about the ride’s cabin and rough capabilities when it was released. However, Kia’s engineers quickly made adjustments, ensuring drivers that those issues were resolved. The Gwangju Plant in South Korea and the Yangcheng Plant worked together, producing the first generation of Kia Soul vehicles from 2008 to 2013. These automobiles carried 1.6L and 2.0L 4-cylinder engines. These powertrains were paired with 5- to 6-speed manual transmissions or 4- to 6-speed automatic transmissions. As of 2019, Kias are solely built at the South Korea location. Therefore, the fresh Kia models on lots across the United States come from the Gwangju facility.
Kia History
Etymology is the study of a word’s history. For Kia, the company’s name means arise in East Asia or rise from East Asia. When you attach Soul to the manufacturer’s name, it translates to arise of East Asia’s Soul. Kia was founded in 1944 as the Kyungsung Precision Industry. The company survived ups and downs throughout the 80s and 90s. In 1997, Kia filed for bankruptcy. The Hyundai Motor Company bought 51% of Kia shares the next year, saving the automotive giant from total collapse. Although Hyundai is the majority shareholder, Kia remained vigilant in its endeavors. In 2006, Kia signed a $1 billion deal for a Kia Motors Manufacturing facility to be built in West Point, GA, and that factory was opened in 2010. Four years later, Kia would receive more notoriety when Pope Francis was seen riding in a Kia Soul while he was visiting South Korea.
