Social Media Challenge Causes Rise in Vehicle Theft
As a quick recap, in 2022 social media challenges began to spread that encouraged people to break in and steal Kia vehicles. They were able to gain ground with this challenge and theft due to the fact that certain Kia models have a traditional steel key to start the ignition and no electric immobilizer or anti-theft alarm system. This essentially makes those models very susceptible to hot-wiring since no audible alarm goes off if the vehicle starts without a key in the ignition.
Kia’s Response and Options
The good news is that Kia has addressed the situation and is offering several options. For anyone who has a Kia vehicle that is affected, they will be notified by Kia and given information about a free software upgrade*. The upgrade will install an immobilizer system for anti-theft. It will also include a sticker on the outside of the vehicle that shows the vehicle has been installed with the system to hopefully deter those who are considering breaking in or attempting the challenge. If your Kia vehicle is affected but does not qualify for a software upgrade you do qualify for a free steering wheel lock*. It’s important to note that any Kia vehicle that is a 2022 or later model year is equipped with an immobilizer.
